Why charge at home rather than at a public point
Charging at home is where the real saving sits. Public rapid chargers are useful when you are out on the road, but they are not built for everyday use and the price reflects that.
Much lower running costs
Charge overnight on an off peak EV tariff and your cost per mile drops dramatically compared with public rapid charging.
A full battery every morning
Plug in when you get home, unplug when you leave.
Faster than a three pin plug
A dedicated 7kW charge point typically fills a battery overnight, where a standard socket can take well over a day.
A safer setup
A proper charge point runs on its own protected circuit designed for hours of continuous load, which an ordinary socket never was.
A more appealing property
Buyers and tenants across Falkirk and Stirlingshire increasingly look for EV charging as standard.
How your installation works
Your free site assessment
Your consumer unit, incoming supply and earthing arrangement are checked, along with the best position for the unit and the cable route to it. You get a straight answer on what is possible.
A clear, written price
You receive a full breakdown before committing. If preparatory work such as a consumer unit upgrade is needed, it is explained and quoted separately rather than buried in the total.
Honest charger advice
Tethered or untethered, 7kW or 22kW, solar compatible or smart tariff ready. You get a recommendation based on your car, your parking and how you actually drive, not on what is easiest to fit.
Installation day
Your charge point is fed from its own correctly rated, RCD protected circuit. Cable runs are planned to be discreet, brickwork is made good and everything is cleaned up before you are left to it. Most home EV charger installation work is finished within a single day.
Testing, certification and handover
The installation is tested, commissioned and notified as required, then handed over with your paperwork and a walkthrough of the app and settings so you are confident using it from day one.

EV charger installation cost
Most straightforward domestic installations fall within a predictable range, and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts. What moves the figure up or down is usually one of the following:
- Distance from your consumer unit
Longer cable runs mean more materials and more labour. - The cable route itself
A clear run through a garage is quick. Going under a driveway or around the outside takes longer. - The condition of your consumer unit
If your board has no spare capacity or lacks suitable protection, an upgrade may be needed first. - Your earthing arrangement
Some properties need additional earthing provision or a device that provides equivalent protection. - The charger itself
Prices vary between manufacturers and between tethered and untethered models.
Grant funding you may be able to claim
Government support for EV charging still exists, though it is now targeted at specific groups rather than every homeowner.
If you rent or own a flat
The EV Chargepoint Grant can contribute towards the cost of a home charge point. Homeowners living in houses with a driveway have not been eligible since 2022.
If you are a landlord
The Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant supports installations at properties you let out, with funding available per socket.
If you run a business
The Workplace Charging Scheme contributes towards charge points installed at your premises, across multiple sockets and sites.
Grant schemes require an approved installer and an approved charge point, and the rules change from time to time. Get in touch, and you will be told honestly whether funding is likely to apply to your situation before you commit to anything.
Grant information last reviewed July 2026. Current schemes are funded until 31 March 2027.

Mark of Powerwise Limited came today to put in carbon/fire alarms, check over electrics round the house, sorted what needed to be sorted. He was very pleasant and explained things to me in a way I could understand and I thought his price reasonable, he kept me informed by email day/date he was coming and then a short reminder just before he came. I would certainly give him a good recommendation for someone looking for a good hard working electrician. I would certainly get in touch with him again for future electrical work needing done. EV Charger Installation Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a home EV charger installation take?
Most domestic installations are completed within a single day, often in three to four hours. Where a consumer unit upgrade or a long cable run is involved, it may take a little longer, and you will be told this before the work is booked.
Do I need a driveway to have a charger fitted?
You need somewhere off street to park where the cable can reach your vehicle safely. A driveway, garage or allocated parking space all work. Running a cable across a public pavement is not permitted.
Can I just use a normal three pin socket instead?
You can charge from a standard socket in an emergency, but it is very slow and household sockets are not designed for hours of continuous high load. A dedicated charge point is faster, safer and far better suited to daily use.
What speed of charger should I choose?
For most homes a 7kW unit is the right answer, since it fully charges nearly any car overnight on a standard single phase supply. Faster 22kW charging needs a three phase supply, which is far more common on business premises than in houses.
Will my consumer unit need upgrading?
Not always. It depends on whether your existing board has spare capacity and suitable protection. This is checked during your site assessment and any additional work is quoted clearly and separately.
Do you install chargers for businesses as well as homes?
Yes. Workplace, fleet, customer and rental property charging is installed across Falkirk, Stirlingshire and the Central Belt, including multi socket sites with load management.
